As they prepared to leave, they heard voices coming from the kitchen. The two women spoke in Japanese; it was Kaida’s mother, Rinka, along with Kaida herself.

Anika looked at Jaxon with confusion. “Who are those women in the kitchen?”

“That is Rinka, Kaida’s mother. She and Emiko came for an unexpected visit last night, before Kendra disappeared.”

Realization dawned on Anika’s face. “But they do not know about us. Our relationship.” Jaxon sighed heavily. Anika quietly left the bedroom to speak with Kaida. Jaxon could hear their conversation through the closed door.

Rinka’s voice held a hint of apology. “I am so sorry to disturb you, Anika.” Anika’s response was gentle but firm. “It is no bother. I need to speak with Kaida about some hospital matters that may involve the police.”

Rinka offered to leave the kitchen, but Kaida interjected, “It’s alright, Okāsan. We’ll step outside into the garden.” Jaxon remained stoic by the door, listening as the sounds of conversation faded into the background, replaced by the soft opening and closing of the back door.

His stomach churned with unease. While their unconventional relationship remained a secret for now, the pressing matters of Kendra’s disappearance, the Quantum Dreamweaver, and the dangerous Echoes weighed heavily on his mind.

He watched through the window as Kaida followed Anika out into the chilly fall air of the garden, shivering despite her Chief Inspector uniform. Crystal leaves from the forest littered the ground, catching weak sunlight and crumbling into glass-like powder underfoot.
